Suit Colors Every Modern Gentleman Should Consider

Learn when to wear black, navy, grey, beige, burgundy, and other refined suit colors for business, weddings, celebrations, and evening events.

Navy is the most versatile color a man can own — it works for business meetings, weddings, and evening events alike, and it photographs well under almost any lighting. If you are building a wardrobe from a single suit, navy should be it. Grey, particularly mid-grey and charcoal, is the natural second choice. Charcoal reads slightly more formal and pairs well with black shoes for business or evening wear, while a lighter grey works well for daytime events and warmer climates. Black is often misunderstood as an everyday business color — in most professional settings it can read as overly formal or funereal, and is better reserved for black-tie events or evening occasions. Beige and tan suits are excellent for daytime weddings and outdoor events, especially in warmer months, but should generally be avoided for formal business settings. Burgundy and deep green have become popular for grooms and special-occasion wear — they stand out without being loud, and work particularly well as a subtle way to distinguish a groom from his groomsmen. Whatever the color, choosing a fabric with a fine, subtle texture rather than a flat, shiny finish will keep the suit looking refined rather than costume-like.
