Five Details That Elevate a Custom Suit

Discover how lapels, buttons, pocket styles, lining, stitching, and trouser breaks can make a custom suit feel truly personal.

Lapel width and shape have an outsized effect on how a suit reads — a notch lapel feels classic and versatile, while a peak lapel adds formality, and lapel width should generally scale with your build and the suit's overall silhouette. Getting this proportion right is one of the simplest ways to make a suit feel intentional rather than generic. Buttons are a small detail with a large visual impact. Horn or corozo buttons add a subtle texture and quality that plastic buttons can't replicate, and functional 'surgeon's cuffs' — buttonholes that actually open — are a quiet signal of bespoke construction. Pocket style is worth considering beyond the standard flap pocket: jetted pockets offer a cleaner, more formal look, while patch pockets feel more relaxed and work well on lighter, casual suits. Lining color is another easy way to personalize a suit — a bold lining hidden inside a subdued jacket adds a personal touch without affecting the outward formality. Finally, trouser break — how the trouser hem meets the shoe — should be decided deliberately rather than left to a generic default. A slight break gives a cleaner, more modern line, while a fuller break reads more traditional. Each of these details is small on its own, but together they separate a truly custom suit from something merely well-fitted.
